FREE MUSIC FRIDAY PRESENTS…

MARK T. FOLK & BLUESFree Music Friday presents Mark T. Folk & Blues - The Left Bank Village

Originally from Hereford, but now living near Reading, Mark T. has been playing his unique blend of folk, blues and roots music since the mid eighties, solo and in the company of esoteric collaborators The Brickbats, roots rock band Rootdogs and more recently with Charles Spicer (Mellstock Band).

High points have included an Arts Council award for his LP The Room, main stage Saturday night appearances at the Bracknell, Pontardawe and Christchurch festivals as well as sessions for BBC Radio 2 live from their Paris theatre London and Pebble Mill in Birmingham as well as gigs in Denmark, Italy and two tours of France. Also of note was a recent performance in the Salon Noir cave in Niaux, France amongst the 15,000 year old cave paintings.

In January 2018 Mark was the winner in the Best Solo Artist (Male) category of the G.S.M.C. Music Awards.

His new CD ‘From Blues to Rembetika’ has received excellent reviews in all areas of the music press.

Here are some press quotes:

An original voice – The Guardian

‘Fiery bouzouki and neat blues slide, topped by T.’s distinctive, clear, English vocals and a good choice of songs’ From Blues to Rembetika review fRoots.

‘Blues to Rembetika’ is a wonderful testament to his free spirit and joi de vivre’ RnR (RocknReel)

‘From Blues To Rembetika’ is a very interesting album that opens the gate wide to other cultures and gives you the feeling that blues and roots music are indeed captured from one big barrel’. Rootstime (Belgium)

Mark’s approach to the blues is pretty authentic – that’s a National Triolian on the cover – but I’m not expert enough to judge his Rembetika. I just know I enjoy it. Dai Jeffries, Folking.com

Congratulations to Mark T winner of this year’s Best Male Solo Artist at the GSMC Music Awards, Mark is an amazing talent who wowed our crowds in 2017 and again on the Awards Night itself, a fantastic musician and songwriter it was an honour to him perform for us. Graham Steele

Why haven’t I heard of you before? Reg Presley (Troggs)

Bandstand Buskers David Barney - The Left Bank Village

Originated in the heart of the Midlands David Barney has pursued musical interests from a young age playing the keyboard, cello, recorder, guitar, harmonica and voice.   David discovered a passion for great music during adolescence singing along with the records of the greats such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Andy Williams, Chris De Burgh and Roy Orbison to name a few.  During his teenage years he was quick to get into singing and playing acoustic guitar enjoying a range of music from folk, country and rock, especially artistes such as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Bon Jovi.  During his late teens and early twenties David began to write and perform original songs entering competitions such as ‘Project Talent UK 2009’ securing a place with the final 60 contestants and performing for a packed venue in the heart of Birmingham’s Custard Factory.  During this time David realised the importance of developing himself as an artiste and pursued diplomas and a degree in Popular Music and Music Technology during which time he worked with a band in the genre of bluesy rock ‘n’ roll, as a lead vocalist and Front Man also contributing to write original songs for the band as well as performing covers.  After graduation David worked as a Vocal Entertainer circa 2014-2015 on local circuits across the midlands through music agents performing solo with the aid of backing tracks and a full PA system.  Following the success of live performance as a vocal entertainer, David focused his energies on instrumentation work on piano, guitar & voice continuing to hone his craft as player.  David has also played keyboard/piano with various bands independently as well as band ensembles during theatre shows and productions for Derby Theatre whilst studying a joint honours degree for Theatre Arts & Creative Writing.  David has a passion for improvising on the piano and continues to develop his skills as an all-round player, producer, arranger, and music enthusiast.  Alongside music David is also writing a dissertation focused around music performance for the award of ‘Master of Arts degree in Education.’

BANDSTAND BUSKERS PRESENTS… Georgie Hayes @ The Bandstand
Aug 26 @ 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

BANDSTAND BUSKERS WELCOMES…

Georgie Hayes to our Bandstand for an afternoon of FREE music

Singer guitarist George has had a diverse and chequered career. In his early teens he played in folk clubs in and around London.  He then played in prog-rock bands in North London whilst working for a record company promoting new artists, and carried on to create a post punk thrash band called “The Crew” They achieved a huge following but broke up after about 12 months. After a few years of solo work playing around the UK and Europe, George trained his voice for musical theatre and a new chapter unfolded – he went to Japan with the musical ‘South Pacific’ and then appeared in the West End with musicals such as ‘Rocky Horror’ ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ and ‘Miss Saigon’.  In Berlin he appeared in a successful adaptation of ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’.  In 2002, George and his wife Jules (born in Herefordshire) decided to have a complete change of lifestyle and bought an old monastery in Italy and converted it to holiday accommodation.  George studied Italian classic ballads and together with his singer/guitarist repertoire he developed a truly eclectic mix of material.  He is still in demand in Italy and returns to perform when he can. The couple have recently returned to the UK and now live in Hereford. They are looking forward to being part of this wonderful city.

Although George once appeared at the Courtyard Theatre as Uncle Nasser in ‘My Beautiful Laundrette’ this will be the first time he has sung in Hereford.

Expect a diverse mix of songs ranging from a subtle contemporary style voice to a powerful vocal delivery. Guitar styles vary, lots of finger picking.

Farcical Comedy is back after their summer break and we have a ridiculously good line up on Saturday 1st September at the  subterranean speakeasy at the Leftbank Village.

Headlining

Rob Deering performs stand-up comedy with music, using a guitar, a loop pedal and his voice to create impressive rock and pop soundscapes – and do jokes, of course.

Along with being one of the most in-demand headliners on the UK circuit, he’s toured nationally and performed solo shows at the Edinburgh Fringe many times since starting out in comedy in the year 2000. His late-night, live-music comedy pop quiz Beat This is a festival institution, on London’s South Bank, at Wales’ Green Man and many more besides Edinburgh.

Rob has performed throughout the world, in shows from the Middle East to Melbourne, Shanghai to the South of France, and he has appeared on any number of Radio and TV shows, often using his extensive knowledge of film, popular music and… well, ‘general’; he has won Celebrity Mastermind and a comedians’ special of the Weakest Link on BBC One, for example.

He also recently ran all over Britain for BBC 6 Music. Yes, Rob runs, presenting the podcast Running Commentary with fellow running comic Paul Tonkinson, and fundraising for his favoured charity Parkinson’s UK; he has run seven marathons. He produces and hosts Parkinson’s UK’s annual gig Shake With Laughter at London’s Comedy Store, where he is also a regular member of the Cutting Edge topical comedy team.

Opening

enny moved from the Welsh mountains to the Big Smoke and embarked upon a career in stand up comedy. Highlight: Appearing on a BBC Radio Wales panel show with Jo Brand. Low point: After a gig, an audience member saying ‘You should be a stripper’ (Both secretly highlights).

She has written for BBC Radio 4’s The News QuizHuffington Post and Glamour Magazine and has traveled (parts of) the world with her comedy. She has performed in Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore, Switzerland and Australia where she won the Percy Award for most tickets sold in ‘The Imaginarium’, (over 1900 tickets) during the Adelaide Fringe.

In August 2016 she performed her debut hour at the Edinburgh Fringe, ‘Jen-Hur’ which received reviews such as ‘★★★★★ An Excellent comedic work’ – Edfest Mag and ‘★★★★ A brilliant show and well worth a watch’ – Arts Award Voice

Sep 7 @ 6:00 pm – Sep 16 @ 10:00 pm

Molly Bythell at DKP Gallery for h.Art Week

Molly Bythell at DKP Gallery

Introducing Molly Bythell, an exciting young new artist, and her collection of joyous paintings exploring women today at DKP Gallery. Experience female paintings from a female perspective. As a woman without limits, she manipulates the figure to allow it agency and joy, rather than being subject to the male gaze.

Herefordshire Art Week is a trail lasting nine days, for artists, craft-makers and creative businesses to raise profile and artwork sales. They will be opening their studios, galleries and group exhibitions to the public. H.Art showcases the wealth of creative talent in Herefordshire. With over 100 venues participating across our county, you can enjoy meeting a myriad of artists, chat and view their work.

Molly has recently taken part in PoArty, a collaboration of art and poetry in Ledbury, hosted a solo exhibition ‘Available’ at The Craft Gallery Hereford, and exhibited in ‘FBA Futures’ at the Mall Galleries London. Her awkward figures pull the rug out from under usual stereotypes. She’s not your typical run of the mill artist; you do not want to miss her at DKP Gallery, The Left Bank Village.

Exhibition runs from Saturday 8th to Sunday 16th September.

With a special PREVIEW from 6 – 9pm on FRIDAY 7th September.

OPEN 9am – late everyday

The Electric Swing Circus is a live 6-piece fusion of classy 20’s swing and stomping electro beats. Drawing influence from 1920’s swing and jazz, the explosive sound of the Electric Swing Circus reverberates back through time, re-inventing the genre of electro-swing for an ever expanding, multi-generational audience.

The ESC’s sound is an exciting combination of vintage samples, gypsy-jazz guitar, electric double bass, keys, live drums, dirty synths and electro beats. Fronted by a powerful female double-act, with extensive variety of vocal styles, the ESC delivers a consistently dazzling show.

The band are active in the electro-swing scene, running their own annual festival, Swingamajig, and regular club night, Hot Club de Swing, as well as curating acts for events and stages across Europe.

Rocking stages at festivals and events across the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, the ESC have travelled the world and earned themselves a reputation for stunning high energy live shows. There is nothing quite like the ESC on stage, in full costume the band looks great, sounds great and they keep the stage jumping until the curtain falls. With main stage shows at festivals like Boomtown and Shambala, as well as the Avalon stage headline set at Glastonbury 2015, the band have shown they get the crowd moving at any time of day or night.

The new album, “It Flew By”, shows a real development of the ESC sound, with catchy songs, thundering bass lines and soaring vocals. The process has taken almost two years to experiment with the recording process, and discover how best to capture the energy from the live show and translate it onto the record and we are really excited to share the music with the world. Produced by James Bragg (the Skints, Gengah, Dry the River) and recorded between Middle Farm Studios in Devon and Giant Wafer in Wales.

The band first formed in 2011, and have since toured 4 continents, playing major festivals and headline shows all over the world.

The Left Bank Village are SUPER excited to welcome this phenomenal band to our stage, Ladies and Gentlemen, hold onto your hats. The circus is coming to town!
